President Obama Health Care Plan: ” What It All Mean for Us”

More than a week after President Obama signed the sweeping new health care law, which eventually provides insurance coverage for 32 million uninsured American, many of us are still scratching our head (Parker). What just happened? And how and when will we start feeling its effect? Effective this year, in six months, children with preexisting condition cannot be denied health care. In 2014, Medicaid will cover individual up to 133 percent of the poverty levels (Landau and Parker) also, in 2014, insurance companies will not be able to deny adults with preexisting conditions coverage or charge them higher premium. Some adult won’t likely qualify for Medicaid under the 2014 rules (4). More immediately however, they will benefit from the expansion of funding for community health center, which offer free and reduced-cost care. While the biggest change will not take effect until 2014 some important provision will begin as early as June, the question that everyone want to know is †Å"How soon will the new law help me† (Obama Plan). The answer depends on your age and reason for not having insurance. If you can’t afford or don’t qualify for insurance because of a preexisting Medicaid problem (1). You may be eligible for a new federal â€Å"High risk† pool to be offered by the end of June (2). The federal plan is expected to offer more affordable coverage than the existing state plan and will not impose the same income restriction as Medicaid (Obama Plan). The new plan will begin immediately to close the Medicare â€Å"donut hole†, by giving you 50 percent discount on brand-name prescription drug for senior who qualify. It will end insure practice of charging different premium or denying coverage based on gender, and will limit premium variation based on age. The new bill will provide new tax credit on a suding scale to individual and families that will limit how much of their income can be spent on premium. People with nongroup pl an may see increase, but more than half the enrollees in nongroup plan will qualify for federal subsidies, lowering cost for middle and moderate-income families on average by about 60 percent (Obama Plan 7 ).And also this year tax credit as high as 30 percent of premium will be available to many small businesses, which offer health coverage to employee. The President plan will also cap out-of pocket expanse and will prohibit insurance companies from imposing annual or lifetime caps on benefits payments. Under the new rule companies generally can’t rescind a policy for a minor application error. Many people look at this as a better law for health care.Better for all American families; like there are now no more worries about if you will be coverage because you don’t have insurance or if you worried about losing your job and now have no money to pay for your child Medicare bills. This plan will protect all that qualify for better health care. Although there are still peo ple that feel that this isn’t much and that feel we have went from a full plan with a small deductible and great prescription coverage to a plan now that is basically a high-deductible plan. But I feel that it’s a winner.

Merely as Joe finished make fulling Pip in on the state of affairs, Mrs. Joe busted through the door and began to paddle and chastise Pip about what he did, before chilling down. Once the ambiance was restored, Mrs. Joe began to function the dinner of staff of life with butter to Pip and Joe. Alternatively of eating the piece, Pip slid his part into his bloomerss due to the fright of decease from the alien at the God's acre. However, Joe noticed that Pip ‘s piece was gone and assumed that he swallowed the staff of life, which led to Pip ‘s ingestion of the Tar-water. Later that flushing, the house was shaken by the sound of guns, which made Pip funny about what it symbolized. He shortly learned from Joe that the sounds marked t he significance that there were inmates on the loose. The awoken extra tried to assail Pip, but missed wholly and escaped off. After the happening, Pip arrived at the Battery and found his adult male, who appeared in a saddening status. Pip continued toward the deprived, hapless alien, and handed over the nutrient and file. Then, the famished single immediately began to banquet on the nutrient without vacillation and thanked Pip one time he satisfied his hungriness. Later, Pip brought up the subject about the indistinguishable individual he had ran into on the journey over, which sparked up the adult male ‘s pique and heightened his senses. After hearing about his enemy, the adult male prepared to run his reproduction, but foremost, he demanded Pip to manus over the file and he began to hammer off at the Fe. With his attending focused on taking the ironss from his leg, Pip took the chance and left the scene. Chapter Four When guilty Pip returned place, he found his sister busily cleaning the house for the approaching dinner that flushing. After Pip fabricated that he was listening to Christmas carols, he joined Joe in the kitchen and Mrs. Joe served them a weak breakfast of staff of life and milk due to her busy agenda. Once they finished eating, Joe and Pip went to go to church in topographic point of Mrs. Joe, since she was excessively busy from readyings. While off, Pip was haunted by the ideas of his sister detecting the stolen nutrient such as the meat pie. When the two returned, they found the house prepared for the dinner response and waited for the invitees to get. Soon, the invitees, Mr. Wopsle, Mr. and Mrs. Hubble, and Uncle Pumblechook stepped in, the household and invitees exchanged salutations and any gifts they possessed. As everyone sat down on the dinner tabular array, the repast eventually commenced. Throughout the dinner, many conversations were exchanged and the eventide was turn o vering swimmingly, until Mrs. Joe served Uncle Pumblechook the tar-water alternatively of the brandy ( Pip had refilled the incorrect bottle when he stole the brandy ) . Before long, Uncle Pumblechook recovered and the eventide was rapidly coming to an terminal, which prompted Mrs. Joe to function the concluding and most impressive dish of the eventide, the porc pie. Chapter Five In the beginning of the chapter, the soldiers entered the house, which alarmed the dinner invitees and distracted Mrs. Joe off from the porc pie every bit good. The soldiers shortly requested for Mr. Joe, the blacksmith, and asked him to mend the presented handlocks for the male monarch. Immediately, Joe went off to work and was accompanied by a few soldiers. As Joe was working, the commanding officer mentioned the Hunt for the inmates, and how it was expected to stop at twilight once the turnups were renewed. Later, the commanding officer was offered to take a place during his delay and was offered some vino. Finally, after two hours, Joe finished his work and the soldiers left to complete the Hunt for the inmates. However, Joe and Mr. Wopsle chose to label along the pursuit and brought Pip every bit good. During the Hunt, the three trailed at the rear of the battalion and Pip realized that that his inmate would presume that he had betrayed him if he was seen. As the group moved tow ard the Old Battery ‘s place, the soldiers and the invitees heard the sounds of the nearby cheering of two work forces. Next, the military personnels marched closer to the beginning of the noise and saw the two targeted inmates fighting at the underside of the ditch. Upon the gaining control, the 2nd inmate announced that Pip ‘s inmate attempted to kill him. Conversely, Pip ‘s inmate responded by stating that he was forestalling the adult male from get awaying the Hulks. As the alibis persisted, the sergeant silenced the two and told the soldiers to put ablaze the torches for visible radiation. Afterwards, the soldiers stood in a ring and fired their guns to signal the gaining control, and began to process over to the Hulks. Soon, Pip fell asleep as he walked place and Joe carried him on his dorsum through the concluding stairss back place. At place, Mr. Wopsle and Joe met up with Mrs. Joe and Uncle Pumblechook and Joe recalled the chapters of their journey, which included Pip ‘s runaway ‘s fiction about stealing the pie before being rowed back to the Hulks. Pip ‘s inmate ‘s false comments sparked the investig ator in the members of the family and the group began to seek for ways in which the inmate could hold entered the family. Once the Sleuthing concluded, Pip was assisted to his bed and the eventide came to an terminal. Chapter Seven As Pip grew older, he learned to read and could grok the words on the Gravess of his household members. Before coming of age for an apprenticeship with Joe, Pip went to an evening school run by Mr. Wopsle ‘s grandaunt. In add-on to the school, the topographic point for acquisition was besides a store, which was run by Biddy, the granddaughter. Although Biddy ran the shop, she would integrate her clip to assist out Pip ‘s instruction. On one peculiar dark, a twelvemonth after the Hunt, Pip wrote a missive to Joe on his slate. After Pip completed his message, he handed it over to Joe, who was highly amazed, since he had ne'er learned to read or compose. As Joe attempted to read the message, Pip realized that Joe was uneducated and questioned him about his early instruction. Joe began and told Pip that his male parent was the chief hurdle of his acquisition, which led him to get down work at an early age. Besides, Joe informed Pip that when his female parent died, he had found Mrs. Joe, and offered her to populate with him in the forge. Shortly after, Joe included that when he accepted Mrs. Joe into the forge, he besides welcomed Pip to populate at that place excessively. After, he began to portion with Pip his empathy toward Pip ‘s penalties from Mrs. Joe, which illuminated a new position in which Pip viewed Joe. With that, Joe stated that he was non angered by the deceptive narrative, but merely asked for Pip to non raise up any more false narratives. That dark, Pip took Joe ‘s message personally and recognized the twenty-four hours as the most unforgettable twenty-four hours, which changed him profoundly. Key Theories of How Strategy is Developed and Implemented and the Assignment

Key Theories of How Strategy is Developed and Implemented and the Relationship between Strategy, Innovation and Change - Assignment Example The researcher states that the development and successful implementation of effective business strategies are often regarded to be one of the most vital functions of organizational management as it supports them to accomplish the determined goals and obtained the desired outcomes. As stated by Johnson, different strategic levels can be witnessed as existing within a particular organization. For instance, corporate level, operational level, and business level can be identified as three broad categories which are often used in theoretical contexts to segregate strategic levels. The concept of corporate-level strategy has been viewed to be primarily concerned with determining the overall scope of a firm and evaluating its business as well as operational performances. Similarly, the business-level strategy signifies the competencies possessed by an organization and thus plays a vital role in assisting the business to defeat its major rivalries in its targeted business markets. Correspond ingly, the notion of operational-level strategy represents the efficiency of an organization to use its valuable operational resources quite effectively with the purpose of attaining the desired business targets in the most convenient way. As affirmed by Johnson, the conception of corporate strategy is typically described as a procedure that supports an organization’s growth in effectively combining the processes performed within the different functional areas of business through which the attainment of the expected business outcomes is likely to become easier. According to Capon, organizations can obtain numerous benefits by adopting as well as implementing effectual business strategies. The common benefits obtained through strategic effectiveness include sustainable growth opportunities through facilitated stakeholder relationship, better community involvement through enhanced communication, an augmented contribution from organizational members to upraise operational perfor mances and consequently, the successful accomplishment of superior competitive positioning.

Project management Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words - 14

Project management - Essay Example In addition, the paper will also evaluate current issues prevailing in project management and real instances in order to assess role of stakeholders in management of different types of projects. Project stakeholders are a group of individuals who has positive or negative interest in a project, which in turn affect functionality of the project. In general, interests and attitudes of individuals can be dissimilar towards a project. In any project, the primary stakeholders include: Since different stakeholders have separate set of interest in a project, their influence differs across various groups or individuals. However, every stakeholder is important for a project and one should understand their level of interest in the project as this affects success or failure. Moreover, it is the stakeholders who judge performance of a project, instead of project team and manager (Kerzner, 2013). Considering the role of stakeholders, it is crucial that their priorities, need, influence and interest are thoroughly analysed. The analysis results in better understanding of important stakeholders and development of appropriate communication strategy for stakeholder management. One of the important tools is stakeholder mapping, where key stakeholders are identified and categorised as per their interest and influence (Newcombe, 2003). A decade ago, stakeholder management was an area, which drew least amount of attention and was hardly considered in any sort of project development. Yet, growing complexity in the project management area has resulted in consideration of stakeholders as critical element of projects. There are internal as well as external stakeholders and they differ on grounds of project scope, geographical location and external environment of the project. It is a difficult task to manage the stakeholders and requires continuous involvement of project members such as, managers, for continuous improvement in relationship and building mutual trust (Pan, 2005). Business Taxation Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words - 1

Business Taxation - Essay Example This scheme is said to help in reducing the amount of paperwork as one need not necessarily keep track of all VAT expenditures. For one to register for the VAT Flat Rate Scheme, these conditions are worth noting. First, the estimated annual taxable turnover should be below  £150,000 (SJD Accountancy Ltd, 2015). Secondly, if one already joined the scheme will continue staying in it until its turnover hits  £230,000 per year. Third, the taxpayer will not be able to claim back most of the Vat paid on the purchase of goods and expenses. However, a VAT claim can be made to the HM Revenue and Customs on capital assets costing  £2,000 and above. Fourth, a VAT Flat Rate Scheme registered business will be required to charge the full VAT rate on all goods and services and file a return every quarter (Easy Accountancy, 2015). When Molly registers as a VAT Flat Rate Scheme, she will benefit from this scheme by earning money from the VAT because she will charge her sales the normal standard VAT rate of 20% but pay the lower rate of 8.5%. Therefore, the extra revenue earned from this scheme will be: According to the HM Revenue and Customs (2015), tax evasions are an illegal act and are where an individual deliberately attempts not to pay the tax due. The corporations or individuals engaging in tax evasion misrepresent their incomes to the relevant tax administrating body. Such misrepresentations are in the form of inflating deductions, underreporting incomes and using offshore accounts to hide money and its interest (Cornell University, 2015). In simpler terms as put by Murray (2015) and the Taxpayers Australia (2014), tax evasion is the illegal act of failing to pay taxes by failing to report income, reporting disallowable expenses, or failing to pay the tax owed. On the other hand, tax avoidance is a legitimate way of minimising taxes by using the avenues approved by the tax authority

Five Steps that Comprise an effective framework Essay

Five Steps that Comprise an effective framework - Essay Example Therefore, the organization must respond to any opportunity or threat coming on the way. Nevertheless, it can only do that by doing an environmental scanning to research those factors. The external factors include social cultural, environmental, technological, political, economic, and legal factors (Bhandari, 2013). The organization needs to comprise an effective framework when conducting the matrix to ensure that the strategic tool is efficient enough. The organization must follow the right procedure to avoid mathematical or any ignorance or negligence mistake that may end up costing the organization. This is because the matrix is the key of reference when the organization is undertaking any project that requires large amount of capital to start and run and it is of high risks (Lodato, 2014). This matrix will help in analyzing the effect of the external factors and how the organization can respond to them; increase rate of return and reduce, avoid or eliminate the risks. Therefore, the organization must follow the following steps in constructing an effective, efficient, and a reliable EFE matrix: Firstly, the organization should summarize, analyze, and evaluate the external factors that portray themselves as opportunities or threats. For instance, it has to consider the social factors like the age of the population, the cultural beliefs, gender, the level of literacy and so many others. Additionally, it needs to list the economic factors that may include interest rates, foreign exchange rates, level of completion, economic growth, economies of scale, rate of savings and investments. Others include the customer’s disposable income and trends in the stock market. It has to list the political and legal factors that affect the organization like government rules and policies, globalization trends, government subsidies, regulations in international trade, the rate of taxation and so many others. It must include all the environmental factors

Pros and Cons of Managed Care Plans Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Pros and Cons of Managed Care Plans - Essay Example This benefits the beneficiaries of the plans (Kongstvdt, 2007). Managed care plans are beneficial in preventive measures. The people who have benefited from managed care plans are more likely to receive vaccinations and thus less likely to fall ill. This reduces the amount of resources spent in medical attention. However, managed care plans have areas that need improvement. First, managed care plans provide for cream skimming that ensures that only the healthiest people subscribe to the programs. This locks out people who are able and willing to pay the premiums and divides the society into groups based on their health status.   Managed care plans can limit the patient’s use of services by controlling the physicians’ motivation (Health Strategy, 2010). These plans do so by controlling the amount of incentives they offer to the physicians. Physicians’ incentives should be standard, and beneficiaries should receive quality medical services at all times (Kongstvdt , 2007). Competition among managed care plans may lead to a decrease in the quality of health care services provided to beneficiaries.   All the managed care plans will seek to enroll the healthiest people and, therefore, the programs that fail to recruit such people may be driven out of the market. Managed care plans also give physicians an opportunity to alter the way their treatment to people who are not subscribed to the plans so that they can use high concentration services. This will increase revenue to the managed care plans at the expense of patients.

Black Hole. Characteristics and nature Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Black Hole. Characteristics and nature - Essay Example 87, 2004). The presumption of ‘general relativity’ calculates that an adequately dense mass will distort space-time to shape a black hole. In the region of a black hole there is a scientifically described surface known as event sphere that considered being the ‘point of no return’. It is termed black as it soaks up all the radiance that strikes the sphere, not reflecting anything, just similar to an ideal black substance in thermodynamics. According to quantum mechanics, black hole discharges emission similar to a black substance with a restricted temperature. â€Å"This temperature is inversely proportional to the mass of the black hole† (Taylor & Wheeler, p. 194, 2000), and makes it complicated to examine this emission for black hole of astrophysical mass or bigger. It is currently believed that at the core of every galaxy, there is an extremely enormous black hole that is billions of times weightier as compared to the sun. The enormous black hole c onfines nearby stars and pulls them into a spinning accumulation disk. A ‘torus’ within the internal accumulation guards the black hole within those structures that are considered edge on. In a number of these structures, a jet is emitted at a 90 degree angle to the disk and is observed within the visual as well as radio wavebands. In the extreme innermost regions, the disk turns so warm that the discharge is within the â€Å"X-ray and Gamma-ray bands† (Susskind & Lindesay, p. 103, 2004). In spite of its imperceptible centre, the existence of a black hole can be deduced by its contact with other matter. Astronomers have recognized several astrophysical black hole in ‘binary systems’, by learning their contact with their cohort stars. There is rising consent that extremely enormous black holes are real and present at the cores of the majority of galaxies. Specially, there is strong proof of a black hole of above 4 million solar masses at the core of t he ‘Milky Way’. A black hole has a dominant gravitational field that catches all that goes in its vicinity. Scientists now think that a number of galaxies have enormous black holes at their cores. These black holes discharge massive quantities of energy that controls the active happenings that take place in the galaxy. According to scientists, the energy for the black hole may be the â€Å"trapped gas, stars, and dust† (Taylor & Wheeler, p. 78, 2000) that are drawn into the hole. Gas that is drawn into a black hole spins down within the hole much similar to a whirlpool. By means of a â€Å"spectroscope, the Hubble Space Telescope† (Raine & Edwin, p. 28, 2009) has the facility to watch the pace of this gas as it spins around the opening to the hole. The pace with which the gas whirls is said to be the ‘black hole's signature’. By identifying the pace of the gas, the mass of the black hole can be estimated. A black hole at the core of a galaxy i s said to have a â€Å"mass equal to that of 3 billion Suns† (Raine & Edwin, p. 73, 2009). When an object drops into a black hole, any fact regarding the form of that object or allocation of charge on it is consistently spread all along the sphere of the black hole, and is vanished for external viewers. The behaviour of the sphere during this condition is a dissipative structure that is directly equivalent to that of a conductive flexible covering with friction as well as electrical resistance - the covering theory. This is not similar to other field theories such as electromagnetism (Raine & Edwin, p. 70-75, 2009), which have no friction or resistivity on the microscopic point, since they are time reversible. In view of the fact that a black hole ultimately

Religion and International Relations Research Paper

Religion and International Relations - Research Paper Example Although the concept of religion is as old as mankind, it is interesting to note that policymakers and legislators have vastly ignored the roles of religion in the governance of a nation and even international relations. The schism between the East and West has increased by twofold because of this very reason that they fail to incorporate religion in their dialogue, leaving no space for people from these two different worlds to interact (Fox & Sandler 2010, p. 2). The substance of this prose will not only examine the importance of religion in international relation as discussed in light of scholarly theories but it will also discuss the techniques through which they can use to include religion and use it to create a more harmonious society. Although religion has been used multiple times in political context, but despite its frequent usage it is impossible to put down this phenomenon in to a proper definition. Religion is often seen as a set of ideas or notions that are vastly negated by scientific research and are perceived to be irrational (Philpot et.al 2009). Religion is widely believed to be irrational, which underlines the negative sentiments against this institution. However, sadly not everyone especially in the Eastern sphere agrees with that notion which turns out to be the main source of conflict. This is because Religion is responsible for shaping worldviews; as mentioned earlier, since religion constitutes culture it is also a part of an individual’s identity. Religion is also used to legitimize basic human rights and political processes. Moreover, most religions have transformed into huge organizations, like the Catholic Church there is an added pressure to appease and include religions (Fox & Sandler 2010, p.2). Even historically there is a strong tie between correlation between nation and religion is that it is what helped the people relate to one another. It was a binding force as it brought people together and helped them demarcate right from wrong. Religious views led to establishments on various superstitions and myths, and with the rising popularity of science, it just sparked more debates and people became wary of religion, but with terrorist attacks the sentiments became more hostile towards the idea of religion. However the conflict is triggered because most of the scholarly work done on the matter is vastly done from Western-centric perspective and which is why this blatant ethnocentricism in religious views has further deepened the conflict. However, as the society becomes more and more culturally diverse and even aware, there is an added pressure on authorities to take religion into account as per the constitutional clause that entitles every individual to freedom of speech, expression and practices. The most unfortunate fact is that because of the controversial nature of the topic, religion is more or less treated as a tabooed subject. The modern rejection according to Fox & Sandler (2010, p. 10) comes fro m the stigmas attached with religion that is extremist, radical and backward. There is a need for more open dialogue on the subject and an increase in literature from all three sides; which is the pro-religion side, the anti-religion and one from a neutral perspective. Policymaking is a crucial affair as individuals need to take into account diverse needs of the people and religion becomes even more of essence as not just 9/11 but there are plenty of conflict existing in present day that are triggered by or has it s base in religion, which will be discussed in later parts of the prose. Theoretical Frameworks or Perspectives in Psychology Essay Example for Free

Theoretical Frameworks or Perspectives in Psychology Essay Initially psychology was developed using the mental thinking expressed by persons interested in developing the subject of psychology. But John B. Watson differed from that approach and he pioneered the approach in which visible behavior and visible environmental stimulus became the subject of study. B. F. Skinner developed this behavioristic framework further by bringing in the contingent environmental consequences. Behavior is not the outcome of stimulus alone, but it is an outcome determined by the stimulus as well as the contingent environmental consequences of a behavior. This means, there are alternative behaviors for the same stimulus and which behavior is exhibited by a person depends on expected environmental consequences. Cognitive perspective on psychology have developed by arguing that human beings are capable of thinking and concepts related to thinking must be brought into the subject of psychology whose objective is to explain behavior. Even though, one cannot see or observe thinking, still developing concepts related to thinking and using the concepts to explain behavior is required in psychology. Even though one cannot see or observe gravitation, the concept of gravitation is a useful concept in physics. Similarly, concepts related to thinking or cognition are to be developed and used in psychology was the argument of propopents of congitive approach to psychology. The perspectives in psychology have influenced the development of organizational behavior. Cognitive Framework Cognitive approach emphasizes the positive and freewill aspects of human behavior and uses concepts such as expectancy, demand, and intention. Cognition can be simply defined as the act of knowing an item of information. In cognitive framework, cognitions precede behavior and constitute input into the person’s thinking, perception, problem solving, and information processing. The work of Edward Tolman can be used to represent the cognitive theoretical approach. According to Tolman, learning consists of the expectancy that a particular event will lead to a particular consequence. This cognitive concept of expectancy implies that organism is thinking about, or is conscious or aware of the goal and result of a behavior exhibited by it. It means that a person desires a goal and also knows the behavior that will lead to achievement of the goals. In the subject of organizational behavior, cognitive approach dominates the units of analysis such as perception, personality and attitudes, motivation, behavioral decision making and goal setting. Behavioristic Framework Pioneer behaviorists Ivan Pavlov and Jon B. Watson stressed the importance of studying observable behaviors instead of the elusive mind. They advocated that behavior could be best understood in terms of stimulus and response (S-R). They examined the impact of stimulus and felt that learning occurred when the S-R connection was made. Modern behaviorism, that marks its beginning with B. F. Skinner, advocates that behavior in response to a stimulus is contingent on environmental consequences. Thus, it is important to note that behaviortistic approach is based on observable behavior and environmental variables (which are also observable). Social Cognitive Framework Social learning theory takes the position that behavior can best be explained in terms of a continuous reciprocal interaction among cognitive, behavioral, and environmental determinants. The person and the environmental situation do not function as independent units but, in conjunction with behavior itself, reciprocally interact to determine behavior. It means that cognitive variables and environmental variables are relevant, but the experiences generated by previous behavior also partly determine what a person becomes and can do, which, in turn, affects subsequently behavior. A persons cognition or understanding changes according to the experience of consequences of past behavior. Bandura developed social learning theory into the more comprehensive social cognitive theory (SCT). Stajkovic and Luthans have translated this SCT into the theoretical framework for organizational behavior. Social cognitive theory recognizes the importance of behaviorism’s contingent environmental consequences, but also includes cognitive processes of self regulation. The social part acknowledges the social origins of much of human thought and action (what individual learns from society), whereas the cognitive portion recognizes the influential contribution of thought processes to human motivation, attitudes, and action. In social cognitive theoretical framework, organizational participants are at the same time both products and producers of their personality, respective environments, and behaviors. The participants as a group of produce the environment, every individual is a product of the enironment and through his behavior changes the environment for others as well as for himself, every individual is a product of his personality, but also influences his personality as consequence of results of his behavior.

Biographical and Psychological Strategies Essay Example for Free

Biographical and Psychological Strategies Essay Often, people would resolve into using the biographical strategy when they come into a dead end in trying to interpret a work. This is what I like about this particular strategy because it can provide answers to unanswered questions that are not possible to be derived from the work alone. Sometimes, a look at the life of the author helps in understanding a piece of literature. Some say that is a lazy man’s approach into interpreting a text but that does not mean that it is not an effective way. I believe that in all works, there is always a piece of the author in their writings, making this strategy a valid one. We simply cannot deny the fact that the works of an author are almost always influenced by his experiences. I also like how this approach becomes investigative in nature because of the â€Å"digging† of information for the authors’ lives. What I Don’t Like About Psychological Strategies Unlike biographical strategies, psychological strategies do not quite get me that excited. This strategy urges critics to look for â€Å"symbolic† meanings in every work which just complicate things. Though I understand the importance of symbols in literature, this strategy can sometimes be used too much and give symbolism into things and events that are not even meant by the author to have symbols. Though this might contradict my likeness for biographical strategies, I believe that events should (at least most of the time) stand on their own. Another thing that I do not like about psychological strategies is the Oedipus complex theory; it is just far too taboo for me to think of such things. Speaking of theory, this is what mostly this strategy is based on—theory, which means, it is not as reliable as a biographical approach because the latter is based on the lives of the authors, not on speculated ideas.

Oh, Ill Do It Tomorrow Essay -- essays research papers

Oh, I'll Do It Tomorrow Washing the dishes after a meal, doing your homework, getting up in the mornings, calling a loved one; These are only a few activities you might put off doing until the last possible minute. You don't enjoy doing them and it takes time to do them. Time that you would rather spend doing something enjoyable, right? Well, procrastination may not seem like a bad habit, but you would be surprised of the effects it can have on your health, relationships, job, and even your future. Procrastination is when we wait so long to complete a task that we do not want to do, that we only have a short time to complete it. When you have waited until the night before the final exam to study, you worry that you will fail the exam. Worrying causes stress, and stress has been proven to be harmful to a person mentally and physically. When someone is under stress about something thier body releases adrenalin, the hormone that gives you a sudden burst of energy. The body does this to help you cope with sudden stress. For example, do you remember that exam you have tomorrow morning? You are under stress because you don't want to fail, so you stay up all night studying for it. You are capable of staying awake all night because of the release of adrenalin. About eight hours later, it's time for the exam. By now your body is exhausted from using so much energy- you are completely drained. You can hardly stay awake and you can't concentrate. Procrastinating has weakened you mental...

Immigration to Ellis Island :: Informative Essay

Immigrants came to American in search of freedom and opportunity. They mostly came by steamship. Examinations and vaccinations of the immigrants needed to be done. Both immigrants and their baggage had to be disinfected before they could leave Ellis Island. At the entrance to the Lower Bay of New York Harbor, the immigrants were inspected for contagious diseases like, smallpox, yellow fever, and measles. After which they were filed to the reception area. They had to climb three floors of stairs as medical officers watched them for signs of lameness, shortness of breath, heart conditions and mental conditions. The next examination was called the eyelid lift. The doctors used a hook to lift the eyelids to look for trachoma. Trachoma is " an easily spread infection of the eye. Repeated occurrences scar the upper eyelid, eventually turning it inward. The eyelashes then scratch the cornea, leading to blindness." Chalk marks were put on their clothes to indicate what was wrong. A few were, Sc for scalp disease, G for goiter, K for hernia, L for lameness and S for senility. The final test was to answer 29 questions including: name, sex, marital status, occupation, nationality, ability to read and write, race, physical and mental health, how much money they had, prison records, and if they were polygamists or anarchists. When the immigrants passed these tests they could exchange their gold, silver and money for American money and buy railroad tickets to go anywhere they wanted in America.

The Integrity and Strength of Mark Twains The Adventures of Huckleberr

The Integrity and Strength of Huckleberry Finn  Ã‚     Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   When one is young they must learn from their parents how to behave. A child's parents impose society's unspoken rules in hope that one day their child will inuitivly decerne wrong from right and make decisions based on their own judgment. These moral and ethical decisions will affect one for their entire life. In Mark Twains, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Huck is faced with the decision of choosing to regard all he has been taught to save a friend, or listen and obey the morals that he has been raised with. In making his decision he is able to look at the situation maturely and grow to understand the moral imbalances society has. Hucks' decisions show his integrity and strength as a person to choose what his heart tells him to do, over his head.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Huck has been raised in a high-class society where rules and morals are taught and enforced. He lives a very strict and proper life where honesty and adequacy is imposed. Huck being young minded and immature, often goes against these standards set for him, but are still very much a part of his decision-making ability and conscience. When faced to make a decision, Hucks head constantly runs through the morals he was taught. One of the major decisions Huck is faced with is keeping his word to Jim and accepting that Jim is a runaway. The society part of Hucks head automatically looks down upon it. Because Huck is shocked and surprised that Jim is a runaway and he is in his presence, reveals Hucks prejudice attitude that society has imposed on him. Enironmental Pollution Essay

Environmental Pollution is one of the biggest challenges faced by most societies in this modern era. It has become a paradox of our time that urbanization and development be associated with environmental degradation. In man’s quest for social growth, nonchalance to nature’s laws have set in and this has disturbed a number of natural phenomena. The industrial revolution has brought with it technological advancement, such as the discovery of oil and fossil fuels and its virtually universal use in a diversity of industries. Further more rapid growth in population is established to be the fundamental cause of environmental framework collapse. Population growth increases the need to produce consumer commodities and this desire is transformed into a necessity to abuse environmental resources. Population growth creates certain negative environmental issues. These issues could be economic or social by nature. Their consequences range from a decline in air and water quality as well as deterioration in infrastructure and significant health hazards. A rapid growth in human population within the city propagates pressure on the framework of such cities and its natural resources. As cities begin to expand, they take a toll on existing rural areas, creating diverse environmental challenges such as reduced biological habitat as well as pollution of nature’s resources. The increased densities of industrial areas within cities, large number of automobiles and commercial enterprises add to increased health hazards and complete breakdown of ecosystem. Development of thought Our environment plays an important role in life. Man has equally been an active participant in the process of impacting on the environment through population and greenhouse effects. Obviously the growing population indicates a higher usage of resources thus leading to a greater deal of increased pollution. Therefore pollution of the environment has become an issue of significant discussions and diverse consequences. In recent times, the rapid growth has forced the natural environment to change drastically. A greater part of such change can be concluded to be negative with daring implications. Conclusion In light of the mentioned consequences of environmental pollution and the already visible degradation it has imposed on the environment. I would recommend the following bearing in mind that significant measures which must be cost effective and in line with budgetary allocations be taken into consideration. Pollution control Legislation of point sources The social, economic and ecological significance of conservation of the environment cannot be contestable; if pollution is to be maximally reduced, the need to appraise or look into the current levels of pollution, and environmental protection legislations within the city, with a view of presenting a new legislation. New legislated standards should be proposed since already existing legislations are found to be somewhat irregular and deficient. Also the advantages and possible problems of the proposed legislation can be debated upon and discussed. Encourage alternative transportation Alternative means of transport should be highly promoted. Cycling and walking do not propagate any sort of environmental degradation as opposed to the use of vehicles, which through the use of gas and fossil fuels are a significant actor in the downward slide of the negative environmental conditions. This recommendation takes into consideration that this measure might affect the convenience and time related factor that society has grown to enjoy from such vehicle technology. Establish green spaces or urban forestry The establishment of green spaces and urban forestry would lead to a significant decline in civilizations environmental footprints on the environment, meaning the least amount of pollution and emissions. This will facilitate the cleaning of emissions as they are released as well as restoring the ecosystem and natural balance of the environment. Of course this will have to be done without curtailing people’s freedom and rights or the world’s economy. Promote fuel-efficient cars It is a fact that a large percentage of pollution comes from emission of vehicles. It is recommended that alternative fuels or fuel efficient vehicles be encouraged. Means of transport which would be significantly friendly to the environment. Alternative fuel sources would also play an effective role in the reduction of pollution. This recommendation assumes that the alternative fuel type will displace a similar amount of current fossil fuels. It does not consider consumer acceptance or infra-structure issues that will impact the market penetration of these alternative fuels. Implementation of these recommendations would bear a total cost of about $16.2M and is well within the confines of the City Councils Budgetary allocations on tackling environmental issues. Decision-making about environmental issues necessitates the maintenance of a fine balance between the effectiveness of measures and the public reaction towards them. This simply means that in as much as the recommendations tend to curb and reduce the effect of environmental pollution, it might come off as inconveniences to the general public and thus   promote a negative reaction from the people of the city. The implementations and measures no matter how effective will put a strain on the convenience of the public, regardless to say that such measure will be beneficial both in the short run and long run.
